Regulated contaminants detected (within limits)
"Detected" doesn't mean "dangerous." The EPA sets Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) based on decades of health research. Castle Rock's water consistently comes in below MCLs for regulated contaminants. The most commonly detected include:
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs): Byproducts of chlorine disinfection reacting with organic matter. Detected at low levels, well within the 80 ppb federal limit. Long-term exposure at high levels has been associated with health risks — which is why the limit exists — but Castle Rock's levels are consistently below half the allowable amount.
- Haloacetic Acids (HAA5s): Another disinfection byproduct. Similarly detected at low levels below the 60 ppb limit.
