If you're filtering Castle Rock or Highlands Ranch tap water through a Brita, you're getting minimal chloramine reduction. - High TDS: At 200–350 PPM TDS, standard carbon pitchers don't significantly reduce dissolved mineral content. You're drinking water with the same hardness minerals — just with somewhat better taste.

ZeroWater's 5-stage filter with ion exchange resin does reduce TDS to near zero — which sounds ideal. The tradeoff: their filters are expensive and wear out quickly in high-TDS water like Castle Rock's. A filter rated for 40 gallons in low-TDS water might last 10–15 gallons in 300 PPM water. Annual filter costs can run $100–$200 or more for a family, and the very low TDS water has a noticeably flat taste that many people dislike.
What Reverse Osmosis Actually Does
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure, rejecting dissolved solids, most contaminants, and organic compounds. A quality RO system removes 95–99% of dissolved substances, including:
- Total dissolved solids (including hardness minerals)

- Lead, arsenic, chromium-6

- PFAS compounds (though removal varies by system)
- Most pharmaceuticals and pesticides
